Stears is an intelligence startup using data to answer questions about Africa. Our mission is to become the world’s most trusted provider of African data & insight to global businesses, finance and policy professionals. We are a team of 25+ people providing premium data, insight and research on Africa. Currently, our customers pay for access to Stears’ intelligence through a web platform, that includes two features; daily insight and data from Stears directly into our customer’s inboxes and experts ready to answer client research questions about any sector, market or African country. As we expand, all our intelligence (news & analysis, proprietary data, aggregated public data, licensed data, forecasts and reports) will be integrated into a single searchable platform, complemented by a rich mobile experience.

The Role

Why it’s important: As a subscription media business, crafting responsive and scalable frontend designs is very important to us. In this role, you will be part of a team that is in charge of building and maintaining the frontend of Stears Business.

What it covers: As a Senior Frontend Engineer in the Stears Business team, you are responsible for:

  • Revamp all our existing frontend components to be more responsive
  • Work with a team of designers and PM to conduct Stears Business redesign user research
  • Work to deliver new features that will be incrementally added to Stears Business
  • Work on the general redesign of Stears Business.

Who you will work with: This role is part of the SB Tech team. As Senior Frontend Engineer, you will also be a member of the Delivery team (product, design & engineering) and report to the CTO. In addition to working with the core team of product managers, engineers, and designers, you will work with many internal stakeholders, including the CEO, CTO, COO, Customer Success, Marketing, and Analytics.

Our ideal hire has:

  • At least 4 years of experience in front-end software development, using
    • HTML, CSS and Javascript
    • Reactjs
    • Typescript
    • REST APIs
    • Testing and debugging tools
    • Continuous Delivery
  • Experience building reusable and scalable frontend components
  • Experience writing clean and maintainable code
  • Experience building real-time web applications
  • Experience building data visualisation, map or dashboard frontend systems

Responsibilities

Strategy and planning

  • Collaborate with the Product Manager and Engineering Manager on road mapping and visioning for the product
  • Communicate product release plans, risks, implications and timelines with stakeholders
  • Collaborate with the wider team to solve content, data and architecture problems

Product development

  • Join daily scrum meetings with the Product Manager and Engineering Manager to plan and ensure the execution of ongoing sprint work
  • Work with the product development team, including reviewing work, refining stories, planning sprints, and delivering sprint commitments
  • Promote customer needs and the product vision among engineers on the team

Quality

  • Work with the customer success teams to deliver a superb user experience on a daily basis.
  • Contribute to our excellent engineering track record by collaborating with engineers, designers and product managers across Stears to establish high value product development standards and practices
