We are looking for a Senior Energy Analyst with a robust understanding of renewables & utilities in Africa to join our energy desk.

The Role

Why it’s important: We aim to provide our customers with information (data, analytics, insights) on African economies and industries to support and guide their investment decisions on the continent.

Our energy desk is responsible for providing data and analysis on energy trends, patterns, and opportunities in five major countries (South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, and Egypt). This includes providing up-to-date analysis and assessments of market size, growth opportunities, competitive landscape, pricing, policies & regulations, innovation, etc., for the energy sector.

As a Senior Energy Analyst, your mission is to contribute to Stears’ energy coverage by providing an effective mix of reports, datasets, indices, forecasts, and dashboards to support our customers’ investment decisions in the renewables & utilities industries.

What it covers: As a Senior Energy Analyst, you are responsible for generating insightful, market-leading information on the renewables & utilities in our coverage countries.

As a Senior Energy Analyst, you will:

  • Research and analyse the energy sector, including renewables (solar energy, wind energy, etc.) and utilities (electricity, water, waste management, etc) to assess market dynamics, regulatory developments, and emerging trends to guide investment in the industry.
  • Generate short-form and long-form industry reports on the following areas, offering actionable insights to Stears customers:
    • Market size & segmentation
    • Market growth & opportunities
    • Market share & trends
    • Policies & Regulations
    • Prices & price frameworks
    • Competition
  • Monitor operator activities, market share trends, pricing dynamics, and product innovation within the renewables and utilities industries to identify competitive threats and opportunities for growth.
  • Work with data analysts and data scientists to develop indices, predictive models, and historical databases that help investors assess the attractiveness and growth opportunities in the renewables and utilities industries.
  • Monitor government policies and regulatory developments in the renewables and utilities industries to provide insights into the potential impact on operators, investors, and the broader industry.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to junior team members, offering constructive feedback to enhance their research and analysis skills. Conduct regular reviews of their work to ensure high-quality standards, foster their professional growth, and support their development within the team.

Who you will work with: This role is part of the Intelligence team. You will report to the Head of Insights.

We are looking for someone with:

    Required skills & qualifications: These are the minimum requirements for the role

    • At least six (6) years of experience working in a related role focused on renewables and/or utilities.
    • Experience and expertise analysing the renewables and utilities industries in any two of our focus countries—South Africa, Kenya, Ghana, Nigeria, and Egypt—including published research and analysis.
    • In-depth knowledge of the energy sector, including renewables (solar energy, wind energy, etc.) and utilities (electricity, water, waste management, etc), with an understanding of industry dynamics, regulatory environment, and key players.
    • Strong data analysis skills with the ability to analyse, interpret or extract insights from data
    • A proven track record of excelling in research tasks—including gathering information through stakeholder engagement—evidenced by previous experience in roles that require significant research activity.
    • Effective communication skills, including conveying complex financial and industry concepts clearly and concisely to diverse audiences, both verbally and in writing.

    Preferred skills & qualifications: These skills & qualifications are not necessary, but will be highly valued

    • A Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Finance, Economics, Energy Economics or similar degrees.
    • Professional qualifications in Finance (e.g. CFA), management (e.g. MBA), and any relevant industry qualifications.
    • Proficiency in financial analysis, including financial statement analysis, valuation modelling, and risk assessment, with the ability to analyse energy companies' financial performance, profitability, and solvency.
