Job Summary

Hexium is seeking an experienced multidisciplinary engineer to lead our engineering effort and oversee advanced technology development in a dynamic R&D environment. In this role you will collaborate with our scientific team to define requirements, and lead our engineering team through end-to-end engineering of complex devices that integrate plasma processing, metal vapor deposition, and high-power lasers in high vacuum. The ideal candidate will take a hands-on role in early stages, directly contributing to design and execution, and also help build an expert team and shape our engineering organization as we scale.

Company

Hexium is an early-stage company building the next generation of isotope enrichment technology to supply critical materials to the medical and advanced energy industries. Join our world-class team of scientists and engineers to build transformational technology at the cutting edge of plasma physics and atomic physics.

Responsibilities

  • Lead complex technical design activities for systems that integrate high-vacuum chambers, low-temperature plasma processing, and metal vapor deposition.
  • Work with our physics team to define system requirements and technology development roadmaps, ensuring alignment with our business goals.
  • Build and lead a multidisciplinary team of engineers across mechanical, electrical, optical, and controls disciplines.
  • Establish and maintain engineering best practices across all engineering disciplines, including rigorous design reviews, safety protocols, and quality assurance processes.
  • Develop and manage project timelines, budgets, and resource allocation to ensure on-time and on-budget execution.
  • Drive hazard identification, risk assessment, and risk management activities
  • Implement best practices for transitioning prototypes to production, focusing on quality control and process optimization.

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in the design of complex equipment in a highly technical industry such as aerospace, nuclear, automotive, semiconductor processing, or national laboratories.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary engineering teams and managing complex projects from concept through development.
  • Strong foundational knowledge in mechanical engineering principles such as structural mechanics, thermodynamics, electromagnetism, and heat transfer.
  • B.S., M.S., or PhD in a core engineering discipline or a closely related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong technical background in high vacuum systems: chambers, pumps, seals, valves, ducts, and clean room techniques.
  • Experience working with plasma, metal vapor sources, or high powered lasers.
  • Proficiency in FEA analysis or vacuum modeling tools (e.g., COMSOL, Ansys, MolFlow).
  • Prior experience working in a research and development environment, startup, or high-growth technology company.
  • Experience developing, starting up, testing, and deploying new equipment to production environments
