Tactical Missile Chief Engineer

Role Description

This is a full-time role for a Chief Engineer at Aeon, located in Austin, Texas. We are looking for a senior-level engineering position responsible for leading the technical design, development, and testing of missile systems, overseeing all aspects of the project from concept to deployment, including managing teams of engineers, ensuring compliance with stringent regulations, and driving innovation to meet complex performance requirements across the missile's various subsystems.

Key responsibilities include:

Technical Leadership:

  • Providing technical direction for the entire missile system development, including guidance systems, propulsion, payloads, avionics, launchers, containers, and related components.
  • Setting technical standards and best practices for the engineering team.
  • Leading design reviews, ensuring all technical requirements are met and risks are mitigated.
  • Work with the Program Manager to design trades for conceptual designs while working closely with technical SME’s and Business Development teams to find the right solution to current and future gaps in the DOD capability to ensure the warfighter has the best solution for current and future conflicts.
  • Coordinate the fabrication of prototype and low-rate production articles and subsystem/system level test efforts.
  • Work with senior leadership to ensure resource plans are adequate for work scope.

Team Management:

  • Overseeing a multi-disciplinary team of engineers across various specialties (systems, electrical, mechanical, software).
  • Delegating tasks, providing mentorship, and evaluating team performance.
  • Fostering collaboration and communication

System Integration:

  • Ensuring seamless integration of different missile components and subsystems.
  • Identifying and resolving technical challenges during system integration testing.

Requirements Analysis:

  • Defining and managing detailed technical requirements for the missile system, aligning with customer specifications.
  • Analyzing mission objectives and translating them into engineering requirements.

Testing and Verification:

  • Overseeing all phases of testing, including design verification, system validation, and flight testing.
  • Analyzing test data to identify areas for improvement and ensure performance meets expectations.
  • Leading Failure Review Boards, determining root cause and identifying solutions.

Customer Interaction:

  • Serving as the primary technical point of contact for the customer, presenting technical updates and addressing concerns.
  • Collaborating with the customer to define system requirements and project timelines.

Compliance and Safety:

  • Ensuring adherence to all applicable safety regulations, quality standards, and government compliance requirements.
  • Work with the Program Manager to Implement robust risk management practices throughout the development process.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Experience in a senior role leading missile programs from initial concept through test and delivery to customers
  • Experience in all areas of missile systems engineering principles, including guidance, propulsion, aerodynamics, and warhead design.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills to interact with diverse customers and stakeholders
  • Experience working on mission critical DOD systems
  • Experience creating teams and focusing them around a common vision
  • Bachelor’s degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical or Software engineering, or equivalent experience in a relevant field.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOD top secret clearance.
  • Expertise in systems engineering methodologies and tools
  • Proven leadership experience in managing complex technical projects
  • Familiarity with military specifications and government procurement processes

Typical Work Environments:

  • Primarily office-based, with occasional visits to test ranges and manufacturing facilities.
  • May involve working on classified projects with security clearance requirements.
